FAQ
What inspired EPOPEO?
I was searching for an ultramarathon that I could compete in with runners my age, when I found no results. No race organizers seemed to account for a high school age division. From there it was clear: I needed to create and organize a platform to host my own high school ultramarathon.
How did the inaugural Natural State Backyard Ultra go?
This was Epopeo’s first ever race and, more importantly, the first ever High School Ultramarathon National Championship. We had a great showing in the open division and high school division for both men and women participants. The men’s open divisions and men’s high school division both completed 10 loops. The women’s open division completed 5 loops. The women’s high school division tied at 3 loops, meaning there was no winner. The race, including entry tickets and donations, raised $10,000 for Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
What does the research say?
I conducted research before beginning Epopeo out of a curiosity to understand my own fascination for the sport compared to other, more experienced runners. After a 10-month process, I discovered that no matter how different a runner was or prepared, nearly everyone consistently felt an extreme satisfaction and accomplishment from completing an ultramarathon. This result further supported my own beliefs and spurred me to encourage others to face the same rewarding challenges myself and so many others enjoyed.
Where is Epopeo based?
Epopeo is based out of the Natural State, Little Rock, Arkansas to be exact. However, in coming events, we plan to extend to other areas of our state, capitalizing on the beautiful nature available for our Arkansas endurance events.
